Barragán Sound System

Recordings ripped from Barragán's vinyl collection are used as source material for
live event – ranging from early Mexican folk recordings, European minimalism, Central
African field recordings, and American cabaret. Guest artists and producers are invited to
process and remix the material to create copyleft licensed live performances.

This new event brings to life works with a legal status identified primarily through the
date of the death of the author, and echoes an event which took place in October 2012
at Casa Barragán during the week of Día de los Muertos. At the present time, Mexico
currently boasts the most restrictive copyright law worldwide, with copyright in recorded
sound to 100 years from both the date of recording and the death of the author. Legal
frameworks governing the material in the EU, enables a different subset of the collection
to be freed for use at MK Gallery.

Barragán Sound System features: Live performances by electronic musicians who
will remix the archive source, an Open Music Archive DJ set of public tracks from
the collection and remix recordings contributed by guest music producers.

Fractured Narratives

Fractured Narratives is an ongoing composition created for MK Gallery's MK Calling
Exhibition.

Edited from improvisations on a reel-to-reel tape machine, this work uses recordings
made at MK Gallery over the last three years as the raw material for an ongoing sound
collage.

Recording will continue throughout the exhibition and the piece will be regularly updated
with new sounds giving the work a constantly evolving structure.

Carousel V

Carousel V was the inaugural event of the newly formed Milton Keynes based
collective, Carousel. Based in Great Linford, a seventeenth century enclave in a
45 year old city, this event aimed to detonate the imaginary cul-de-sac evoked by
the term ‘New Town’. Carousel V offered up an engaging and entertaining
encounter with some of the distinct creativity fostered by this unique city.

Laid out across two floors of Artworks MK’s historic School House, the event
played host to a selection from Milton Keynes current crop of cultural pioneers
alongside creative contributions from further afield.

Curios, acts and artists included; a live multi-projection collage of 16mm films, a
guitar orchestra, some home-engineered sound machines, a lot of feedback, some
loops and a burst of impromptu poetry.

Performers:

Jonny Hill
Ernest Herb
Harry Taylor
Peter J Taylor
Luke Williams
Lewis Webb
Belinski
House of John Player
